The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal dental benefit funded by the Government of Canada and
administered by Health Canada and Sun Life.
The program helps Canadians without private dental insurance access essential dental care by covering a
portion of treatment costs through participating dental clinics.
Important: The CDCP does not always cover 100% of treatment costs.
Some patients may have a co-payment depending on their household income, and certain services may not be covered.
In simple terms, the CDCP:
- Helps eligible Canadians afford dental care
- Is funded by the Government of Canada
- Is administered by Sun Life
- Supports children, adults, seniors, and individuals without private insurance

Who Can Apply for the CDCP?
You may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan if all of the following apply:
- You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- You do not have private dental insurance
- You have filed your most recent income tax return
- Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000

CDCP Eligibility Rollout
The federal government is rolling out CDCP coverage in phases, including:
Seniors aged 65 and older
Children under 18
Adults eligible for the Disability Tax Credit
Other eligible adults without private insurance

How the CDCP Works
The CDCP covers a percentage of eligible dental services based on your adjusted family net income.

What Services Are Covered Under CDCP?
Coverage is based on the national CDCP schedule and may include several preventive, diagnostic, and restorative dental services.

Some major dental treatments may also be covered but often require pre-authorization, including:

Sedation & Anesthesia
In certain cases, CDCP may cover sedation options when medically required, including:
- - Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
- - Oral sedation
- - General anesthesia (case-dependent)
How to Apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan
You can apply for CDCP in several ways.
Apply Online
Visit the Government of Canada website:
You will need:
- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Date of birth and address
- Latest CRA Notice of Assessment
- Information about other government dental programs (if applicable)
After You Are Approved
Once approved, you will receive a welcome package from Sun Life that includes:
Your CDCP member ID number
Your coverage start date
Instructions on how to use your dental benefits

Once your CDCP coverage becomes active:
